چکیده

P-wave velocity images are determined under the Baikal rift zone in Siberia by using teleseismic tomography. Our results show prominent low-velocity anomalies in the upper mantle under the Baikal rift zone and high-velocity anomalies in the lithosphere under the Siberian craton. The low-velocity anomalies are interpreted as a mantle upwelling (plume) which has played an important role in the initiation and evolution of the Baikal rift zone. The rift formation may be also controlled by other factors such as older (prerift) linear lithosphere structures favorably positioned relative to the upwelling and favorable orientation of the far-field forces caused by the India–Asia collision. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Geological Processes in the Baikal Rift Zone: Possible Terrestrial Analogs for the Valles Marineris Region on Mars

Introduction: Recent researches are shedding new lights on the evolution of Valles Marineris and neighboring chaotic terrain and outflow channels. For example , Chapman and Tanaka [1] proposed a hypothesis with an emphasis on magma-ice interactions for the formation of chasmata, interior deposits, chaotic terrain , outflow channels, and surface materials. Terrestrial analog studies are useful i...

Mantle transition zone discontinuities beneath the Baikal rift and adjacent areas

[1] Like most other major continental rifts, the Baikal rift zone (BRZ) in Siberia is presumably underlain by a hot and partially molten mantle, which has a reduced seismic velocity relative to surrounding areas. Recent seismic tomography studies, however, gave conflicting results about the depth extent and even the existence of the low-velocity anomaly beneath the BRZ, suggesting that addition...

Lithospheric structure in the Baikal–central Mongolia region from integrated geophysical-petrological inversion of surface-wave data and topographic elevation

[1] Recent advances in computational petrological modeling provide accurate methods for computing seismic velocities and density within the lithospheric and sub-lithospheric mantle, given the bulk composition, temperature, and pressure within them. Here, we test an integrated geophysical-petrological inversion of Rayleighand Love-wave phase-velocity curves for fine-scale lithospheric structure....

The Thermoactinomyces sp. strain Gus2-1 was isolated from hot-spring sediments sample from the hot-spring Gusikha in Bargusin Valley (Baikal Rift Zone, Russia). The sequenced and annotated genome is 2,623,309 bp and encodes 2513 genes. The draft genome sequence of the Thermoactinomyces sp. strain Gus2-1 has been deposited at DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank under the accession JPZM01000000 and the sequences c...
